Maintaining hardwood floors is not difficult as long as you know what to use, when to use it and how to prevent damage in the first place. Your floors take on a lot, whether it is spills or heavy traffic, which means it is important to keep them clean and debris free and to take the right measures to protect them.

What to clean your floors with:

The best thing you can do for your hardwood floors is to regularly clean with a broom or dust mop to clean up debris or spills you might have missed. For a deeper clean, you can use a mop that is designated for hardwood floors that include a microfiber head. This traps dust and dirt significantly better than a regular mop. You can also use a cleaning agent on the mop, as long as it is engineered for hardwood floors and is designated to work with your mop. We suggest using the Bona Hardwood Floor Care System (https://www.academyfloor.com/catalog/product/view/id/3816/s/bona-hardwood-floor-care-system/) for when your floors need a little extra TLC.

When to clean your floors

We suggest adding your floor’s maintenance to your chore rotation to ensure that they are getting the attention that they need. A weekly dusting or sweeping is the perfect way to make sure that grime isn’t building up on your floor. You can also vacuum your floors weekly with a floor-brush attachment (not a beater bar attachment), which will pick up any dust without scratching your floors. For deeper cleans using a mop, we suggest doing those every 2-3 months or after a heavy traffic event such as a party or event.

How to prevent damage

Learning how to prevent damage to your floors is extremely important, especially because some damage to the hardwood can be expensive and labor intensive. Some easy tips are having your guests remove their shoes before entry and adding entry mats to your doors. This allows for minimal scuffing and the mats will catch any water being brought in from the outside. We also suggest adding felt pads to your furniture (especially chairs) to ensure that they won’t scratch the floors when moved. Lastly, adding an area rug or two in high traffic areas will ensure that any spills or debris are caught on the rug instead of your floors, as well as having the rug create a buffer between your furniture and the hardwood.
